Jill's Journey: Crafting Beautiful Spaces and Community Ties in Hastings

Discover the story of Jill, a visionary designer and community figure in Hastings, as we explore her creative journey with Impressive Windows and Interiors, and Miss Daisy's Mercantile.

Sewn with Love: The Foundations of a Design Dream

Jill's love for design was nurtured in childhood, a legacy passed down from her grandmothers. This early exposure to creativity and craftsmanship led her to pursue interior design. Yet, it was a challenge that transformed her path: the scarcity of skilled artisans in her field. "After Interior Design school, I was unable to find anyone to fabricate window treatments or upholstery for my business, so I decided to attend additional schooling and tackle this myself. I quickly fell in love with sewing again after many years away," Jill recalls. This pivotal decision not only reignited her passion for sewing but also laid the foundation for her unique business, blending design with bespoke craftsmanship.

Miss Daisy's Mercantile: A Family Affair of Creativity

Transitioning from a pop-up shop to a full-fledged store, Miss Daisy’s Mercantile is a testament to Jill's entrepreneurial spirit and her commitment to her roots. "I have passed on my love for sewing and creativity to my children, so it has become a family affair. We have a little assembly line going on in the workroom during the weekends," she says. This intimate involvement brings a distinct, warm, handmade and personal touch to their products, making each item not just a piece of merchandise but a part of their family's story.

Designing with a Conscience: Sustainability at Heart

In a world increasingly aware of environmental impacts, Jill’s approach to interior design stands out. "The health of our clients, their families, and the environment is very important to us," she explains. This philosophy isn't just about choosing eco-friendly materials; it’s about crafting designs that endure, reducing waste and creating timeless spaces that resonate with her clients' values.

Inclusive Design: Catering to All Ages and Abilities

Jill's commitment to universal design goes beyond mere aesthetics. It's about creating spaces that are accessible and comfortable for everyone, regardless of age or mobility. "Health and safety is the main focus of interior designers. Universal design is helpful to more than just the aging population. Say, for instance, you would like to have an aging grandparent visit your house, but you had no full bath or bedroom on the main floor, and they were unable to use stairs. What would you do? We are here to help you with making small and large modifications to assist in situations like this," she emphasizes, showcasing her understanding of how thoughtful design can enhance everyday living for all individuals.

Listening with Ears and Eyes: The Key to Customized Design

Understanding and realizing a client's vision is at the heart of Jill's design philosophy. "We listen with our ears and eyes," she says. This approach, coupled with the use of advanced 3D design software, allows her team to create a visual representation of the project before any construction begins, ensuring alignment with the client's expectations and delivering a satisfying end result.

Historic Hastings in Your Home: Exclusive Online Collections

The online store is a vibrant extension of Jill's vision, bringing a piece of Hastings’ history into homes. "We designed and fabricated a brand new exclusive line of Historic Hastings products featuring notable buildings around Hastings, MN, over the past few centuries. We have oven mitts, tumblers, mugs, aprons, tea towels, and tote bags, and more items are arriving each week. Watch our social media each week for all of our new arrivals. Ten percent of the proceeds for these products benefit the Hastings Historical Society." Jill announces with pride. These products aren't just functional; they're imbued with the essence of Hastings, connecting residents and visitors alike to the rich history of the town's heritage.

Crafting and Teaching: The Heart of Jill's Creative Process

Jill finds immense satisfaction in both creating and imparting knowledge. "I love to work with my hands. Taking raw materials and turning them into finished products for people is a deeply rooted love language for me. I taught in the window treatments industry for over twelve years and thoroughly enjoyed it. These workshops fill both of those buckets for me," she admits, speaking of her dual role as a creator and educator. Her workshops are more than just learning sessions; they are incubators for creativity and skill, inspiring participants to explore and develop their own artistic expressions.

Jill’s vision for her businesses is dynamic and forward-looking. "We plan to have many more combined efforts between Miss Daisy's Mercantile and Impressive Windows and Interiors," she reveals. This synergy of design and retail not only speaks to her versatility as a business owner but also reflects her dedication to offering a holistic experience to her clients and the community. Jill also adds, "While we love the Mercantile, the interior design firm will always be our main business. Miss Daisy's is just a happy bonus we are sharing with all of our favorite people. YOU!"

Schooling and Networking: Jill’s Advice for Budding Designers

Jill's journey underscores the value of a solid educational foundation and the power of networking in the design world. "GO to school. There is no substitute for proper schooling and a solid internship," she advises. Her emphasis on education and building connections highlights the importance of these elements in cultivating a successful career in design. Also adding, "You will make great friends and connections within the industry and lifelong friendships!"
