1889 — Hull-House Opens Its Doors in Chicago
On September 18, 1889, Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr opened Hull-House in rented rooms in a brick mansion on Chicago’s West Side. They welcomed neighbors into newly painted parlors decorated with reproductions of European art. By the following year, their educational work included courses in literature, languages, art, history and music—an open door growing into opportunities to learn.

1793 — A Cornerstone for the U.S. Capitol
President George Washington laid the U.S. Capitol’s cornerstone on September 18, 1793, at the building’s southeast corner. Construction proved slow, with sandstone brought by boat from Virginia and funding often difficult to secure. Congress occupied the still-unfinished building in 1800, years before the Capitol took on the familiar appearance we recognize today.

1870 — An Expedition Encounters Old Faithful
On September 18, 1870, the Washburn expedition entered Yellowstone’s Upper Geyser Basin and encountered the geyser now known as Old Faithful. Nathaniel P. Langford’s account describes a sudden column of water rising more than 100 feet. His journal connects the familiar name with the regular eruptions the party observed during its visit.
