On September 25, 1890, President Benjamin Harrison signed the legislation establishing Sequoia National Park in California. Created to protect giant sequoias from logging, it became America’s second national park and the first established specifically to protect a living organism. For anyone who enjoys time among trees, that is a birthday worth noticing.

1789 — The Bill of Rights Begins With Twelve Proposals
On September 25, 1789, the first U.S. Congress proposed 12 amendments to the Constitution. Ten were ratified on December 15, 1791, becoming the Bill of Rights. Another proposal, concerning congressional pay, took until 1992 to become the 27th Amendment—a remarkably long wait for an idea first sent to the states more than two centuries earlier.

1956 — Voices Get a New Route Across the Atlantic
On September 25, 1956, TAT-1, the first transatlantic telephone cable, opened for service linking Britain with the United States and Canada. Its initial capacity included 30 telephone circuits to the United States and six to Canada. Today marks 70 years since that milestone, when an undersea connection helped bring faraway voices closer.
