On This Date: A Little Time Capsule
1984 — St. Paul’s Original High Bridge Closes
On July 25, 1984, the Minnesota Department of Transportation closed St. Paul’s original High Bridge after inspectors found dangerous corrosion and other structural problems. The towering wrought-iron bridge had carried wagons, automobiles and sightseers above the Mississippi River since 1889. It was demolished the following February and replaced by a new double-arched bridge that opened in 1987.

1909 — An Airplane Crosses the English Channel
Early on July 25, 1909, French aviator Louis Blériot completed the first airplane flight across the English Channel. Flying a Blériot XI, he traveled approximately 22 miles between France and England. The journey showed that the young invention could cross open water and international borders, helping aviation look less like a daring experiment and more like a new form of transportation.

1965 — Bob Dylan Plugs In at Newport
On July 25, 1965, Bob Dylan walked onto the Newport Folk Festival stage with an amplified band and performed an electric set that challenged expectations about folk music.
