On This Date: A Little Time Capsule

  • 1905 — Minnesota’s battle flags moved to the new State Capitol. On Flag Day, historic battle flags carried by Civil War, U.S.-Dakota War, and Spanish-American War veterans were part of a parade from the second State Capitol to the new Capitol building in St. Paul. For many aging veterans, MNHS notes it may have been their last public recognition connected to their service.

  • 1777 — The United States flag design was approved. On June 14, the Continental Congress approved the design of a national flag; Flag Day observances later became formalized through a 1916 presidential proclamation and 1949 congressional legislation.

  • 1919 — The first nonstop transatlantic flight took off. John Alcock and Arthur Brown left Newfoundland on June 14, 1919, and crash-landed in Ireland the next day after completing the first nonstop flight across the Atlantic. They won the Daily Mail prize and were later knighted.
