Project MANHIGH I lifted off from Fleming Field Airport with Air Force pilot Joseph Kittinger aboard, part of early research into how humans could handle the upper atmosphere. That means the road to the Space Age passed surprisingly close to Hastings.
1924 — Congress enacted the Indian Citizenship Act. The law granted U.S. citizenship to Native Americans born in the United States, though the Library of Congress notes that voting rights still depended on state law and some states continued to block Native Americans from voting until 1957.
1966 — NASA’s Surveyor 1 made a successful soft landing on the Moon. NASA calls it the first true soft landing on the Moon, and the mission helped prove technology needed for later lunar landings. Surveyor 1 later transmitted more than 11,000 high-resolution images.
