On This Date: A Little Time Capsule

  • 1927 — Minnesota’s Charles A. Lindbergh made aviation history. Lindbergh, who grew up outside Little Falls, became world-famous for the first nonstop, solo transatlantic flight; the Smithsonian notes the flight took place May 20–21, 1927, in The Spirit of St. Louis. A river-town bonus: Lindbergh’s boyhood home was also along the Mississippi, giving today’s Hastings readers a very Minnesota connection to a world-changing flight.

  • 1862 — President Abraham Lincoln signed the Homestead Act. The law opened surveyed public land to settlers under specific requirements, including residence and improvement of the land, and it became one of the major forces shaping western settlement in the United States.

  • 1873 — Blue jeans got their birthday. Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis received U.S. patent #139,121 on May 20, 1873, for using rivets in men’s work pants — the little metal idea that helped turn denim into one of the world’s most familiar pieces of clothing.
