1883 — A Railroad’s Last Spike Comes From Minnesota
On September 8, 1883, a ceremony near Gold Creek, Montana, celebrated completion of the Northern Pacific Railroad, connecting the Lake Superior region with the Pacific Coast. The ceremonial last spike was not gold: it was the same spike used thirteen years earlier to begin construction near Carlton, Minnesota. The tracks had actually joined in August; September 8 was the celebration.

1565 — St. Augustine Begins Its Story
On September 8, 1565, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés and Spanish settlers founded St. Augustine in what is now Florida, at a site already occupied by the Indigenous Seloy community. Following a religious service, Menéndez invited Seloy people to a meal. The National Park Service describes this thanksgiving gathering as occurring 56 years before the better-known Plymouth celebration.
