1909 — A Lighthouse Sends Out Its First Light
Just before sunset on September 9, 1909, the lighthouse on Kalaupapa Peninsula, on Hawaiʻi’s Molokaʻi Island, shone for the first time. Its keepers formed a small community at the peninsula’s tip. For a town that knows the importance of waterways, it’s an easy anniversary to appreciate: a light helping people find their way.

1850 — California Becomes the 31st State
On September 9, 1850, President Millard Fillmore signed the measure admitting California as the nation’s 31st state. California entered as a free state under the Compromise of 1850, a broader package addressing territorial expansion and slavery. Its two new members of the U.S. House took their seats two days later.

1947 — A Computer Bug Actually Has Wings
On September 9, 1947, a team working with Harvard’s Mark II computer reported a moth caught between relay contacts. They taped the insect into the machine’s logbook, preserving an unusually literal computer bug. Computing pioneer Grace Hopper later helped make the incident famous through her public lectures—a memorable case of a tiny creature meeting a very large machine.
